Background: Interpersonal problems play a role in the development and persistence of depressive disorder symptoms. Based on previous studies, interpersonal psychotherapy can be helpful in reducing interpersonal problems. Although several studies have confirmed the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy in reducing depressive symptoms, its efficacy in reducing interpersonal problems among depressed individuals—through a protocol adapted based on the phenomenological components of Iranian patients—has not yet been investigated.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy protocol based on phenomenological components of Iranian depressed patients in reducing interpersonal problems.
Methods: The method of this study was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group and a three-month follow-up. The statistical population of the study included all patients with depressive disorder in Tehran province during the period 2022-2023, among these individuals, 30 people (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group) were purposefully selected and then randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The data collection tools in this study were the Structured Clinical Interview for Disorders based on DSM-5-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2022) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (Barkham et al., 1996). Also, to analyze the research data, the mixed ANOVA method was used using SPSS-27 software at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The results showed that the adapted interpersonal therapy protocol based on the an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy protocol based on phenomenological components of Iranian is efficacy in reducing interpersonal problems and its components in people with depressive disorder (P<0.05).
Conclusion: According to the findings of the present study, it is suggested that counseling centers and psychological clinics use an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy protocol based on phenomenological components of Iranian depressed patients to help depressed individuals with interpersonal problems in order to manage emotions and improve interpersonal relationships in clients.
