Background: Unstable marriages not only affect the couples but also have negative impacts on the children and society. Research shows that individuals with different levels of psychological capital can have different attitudes towards marriage, which can affect the stability of their marriage. However, sufficient research has not been conducted in this area. Therefore, given the importance of the topics of family and marriage, providing a model for predicting marriage stability and examining the influencing factors will be beneficial.
Aims: The aim of this research is the structural model of psychological capital with marital instability in married women: the mediating role of cognitive flexibility.
Methods: This descriptive research is of a correlational type that has been conducted using structural equation modeling. The statistical population of this research consisted of all married female employees of universities in Tehran in the year 2024. The sample of the research included 300 married women employees from universities in Tehran who were selected through convenience sampling. To collect data, the Marital Instability Index (Edwards et al., 1987), the Psychological Capital Scale (Luthans, 2007), and the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFI; Dennis & Vander Wal, 2010) were used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 28 and AMOS 26 with Pearson correlation coefficient and structural equation modeling.
Results: The results obtained from the correlation coefficient showed that there is a significant negative relationship between psychological capital and cognitive flexibility with marital instability (P≤0.05). The results obtained from the structural equation modeling indicated a good fit of the statistical indicators. Psychological assets had a negative and significant effect on marital instability both directly and indirectly through cognitive flexibility.
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that psychological capital affects the stability of marriage, and this effect is facilitated by the mediating role of cognitive flexibility. Therefore, by teaching psychological capital and cognitive flexibility, individual internal resources can be adjusted for women to cope with the challenges ahead.
