Abstract:   (49 Views)
Background: Somatoform disorder is defined as a preoccupation with the fear of becoming ill or the belief that one has a serious illness, which is associated with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral symptoms. Cognitive emotion regulation is one of the important problems in girls with somatosensory symptom disorder, and compassion-focused therapy with an emphasis on emotion regulation, mindfulness, compassion for oneself and others, and increased wisdom, empathy, and responsibility can be effective in reducing symptoms in these individuals.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate The Effectiveness of Compassion-Focused Therapy on Somatic Symptom Disorder, Cognitive Emotion Regulation, and Self-Care Self-Efficacy in High School Girls with Somatic Symptom Disorder
Methods: The research method was a semi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population was all female high school students in Kamyaran city who were studying in the academic year 2024-2025 and had somatic symptom disorder. The statistical sample was selected through cluster sampling and included 30 of these students who were selected from among 58 people who had high scores on the somatic symptom questionnaire and after conducting a diagnostic interview, they were randomly placed in two experimental and control groups of 15 people. To collect data, the somatic symptom questionnaire of Lacourt et al. (2013), cognitive emotion regulation of Garnevsky et al. (2001), and self-care self-efficacy of Lowe and Owen (1996) were used. The experimental group received Paul Gilbert's (2009) compassion-focused therapy in 10 90-minute sessions over two months. The collected data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni test in SPSS26 software.
Results: The results showed that participants in the experimental group reported higher scores in cognitive emotion regulation and self-care self-efficacy (p<0/001). Improvements in physical symptoms and emotion regulation were also seen in the experimental group at the follow-up stage (p<0/001).
Conclusion: It seems that compassion-focused therapy, using techniques such as expressing compassion for oneself and others, empathy, acceptance, wisdom, and mindfulness, can have a significant impact on preventing and reducing the symptoms of somatic symptom disorder.
