Background: Marital infidelity is one of the most challenging issues in emotional relationships that can have profound effects on couples. One of the important and influential variables in treating marital infidelity is emotional flexibility. Despite numerous studies in this field, there is a research gap in comparing the efficacy of narrative therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy on the emotional flexibility of betrayed women.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of narrative therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy on the emotional flexibility of women faced with their husband betrayal.
Methods: The method of this study was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group and the follow-up was three months. The statistical population of the study included all betrayed women who had referred to counseling and psychological services centers in District 5 of Tehran in the first half of 2024. Among them, 51 people were selected using convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental groups: narrative therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy (17 people in each group) and a control group (17 people). Research data were also collected using the Emotional Flexibility Scale (Rashid & Bayat, 2019). For the first experimental group, narrative therapy (White & Epston, 1990) was implemented in an 8-session program, and for the second experimental group, a combined therapy based on acceptance and commitment was implemented in 8 sessions. Also, the variance analysis with repeated measurements and SPSS-22 software were used to analyze the research data.
Results: The results of the present study showed that both narrative therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy led to increased emotional flexibility in of betrayed women (P<0.01). The results also indicated that there was no difference between the efficacy of the two types of treatment in increasing emotional flexibility.
