The psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Multidimensional Mentalizing Questionnaire

Background: Mentalization, the ability to represent one’s own and others’ thoughts and emotions, plays an important role in emotion regulation and adaptive social interactions; however, in the Iranian population, limited valid and reliable instruments are available for the accurate assessment of this construct.
Aims: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Multidimensional Mentalization Questionnaire (MMQ).
Methods: This research is an applied study with a basic objective, employing a questionnaire-based survey and instrument development design. A correlational research design was used. The population consisted of all students enrolled at Shiraz University during the 2024–2025 academic year. From this population, 666 students from various disciplines were selected via convenience sampling. Participants completed the MMQ (Gori et al., 2021), the Empathy Questionnaire (Baron-Cohen & Wheelwright, 2004), the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Davis, 1983), and the Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992). Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 and LISREL 8.8 at a significance level of 0.01.
Results: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the six-factor structure of the MMQ, with fit indices within acceptable ranges (RMSEA = 0.065, SRMR = 0.078, CFI = 0.91, IFI = 0.91, NNFI = 0.90, χ²/df = 3.768). Cronbach’s alpha for the MMQ was 0.75. The MMQ showed positive correlations with the Empathy Questionnaire and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, indicating satisfactory convergent validity, and a negative correlation with the Aggression Questionnaire, demonstrating satisfactory divergent validity.
Conclusion: Overall, the Persian MMQ demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties and can serve as a valid and reliable instrument in clinical research and intervention studies.
