<abstract_fa>

</abstract_fa>
	<abstract>
Background:Studies suggest cognitive factors contribute to social anxiety disorder, and attentional bias is central in anxiety models. Although attentional bias has been linked to social anxiety, the mechanisms, including mediating variables like negative future thinking and responsibility for negative thoughts, remain unexplored.

Aims:This study aimed to develop a structural model of social anxiety based on attentional bias, mediated by negative future thinking and responsibility for negative thoughts, among students.

Methods:A correlational design using structural equation modeling was employed. The population included undergraduate students at the University of Kurdistan during 2023–2024. A sample of 371 was selected via multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Social Anxiety Questionnaire, the Attentional Bias Questionnaire, and researcher-developed scales for negative future thinking and responsibility for negative thoughts. Structural equation modeling, path analysis, and bootstrap methods were applied using SPSS 27 and LISREL 8.8.

Results:The model showed a good fit. Attentional bias positively affected negative future thinking, responsibility for negative thoughts, and social anxiety (P < 0.01). Negative future thinking was positively related to responsibility for negative thoughts (P < 0.01). Both variables were positively associated with social anxiety (P < 0.01) and significantly mediated the relationship between attentional bias and social anxiety (P < 0.01).

Conclusion:Attentional bias increases negative thoughts and social anxiety. Interventions reducing attentional bias and enhancing positive focus, such as mindfulness-based approaches, are recommended. Strategies to decrease responsibility for negative thoughts, including acceptance and reducing avoidance behaviors, should be taught to students.
</abstract>
