Background: Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes experienced after the traumatic events.
Aims: The aim of this study is to explain the post-traumatic growth model of divorced women.
Methods: This research was conducted in a qualitative method based on grounded theory in 2020. The sample group reached theoretical saturation by selecting 19 divorced women (by acknowledging the growth experience by participants and Earned a score of two standard deviations above the average in Tedeschi and Calhoun Post-traumatic Growth Inventory). The sampling method was initially purposeful and then the theoretical sampling method was used to saturate the categories. Semi-structured interview method was used to collect data. Then the data were analyzed by the systematic method of Strauss and Corbin.
Results: The analysis of the interviews led to the identification of 133 conceptual phrases, 13 main categories and 40 subcategories. Growth and prosperity after divorce is a central category of the post-traumatic growth pattern. Achieving growth and prosperity, in general, can be the product of facing suffering and accepting it, spirituality and love for children. Time was extracted as a mediating factor. Support resources, personality traits and internal factors along with educational and family backgrounds contribute to growth and prosperity as underlying factors. Extracted growth strategies include Asking for help, problem solving, managing thoughts and emotions, doing soothing and self-care activities.
Conclusion: The present study, by identifying the factors affecting post-traumatic growth, can pave the way for psychologists and counselors to reduce the negative consequences of divorce and promote post-divorce growth.
