with caregiving, which can lead to various psychological effects, including psychological distress. According to existing literature, both cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) are effective in addressing psychological distress. However, there is a research gap in comparing the effectiveness of these therapies in alleviating psychological distress within the specific population of caregivers.
Aims: The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy and emotion-focused therapy in reducing psychological distress among caregivers of cancer patients.
Methods: This semi-experimental study employed a pre-test, post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up. The study population included all caregivers of cancer patients who received services from the Iranian Cancer Control Charity Foundation (MAKSA) in Mashhad during the last three months of the year 1402 (2023). A total of 45 eligible participants were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to three groups: two experimental groups (30 participants, 15 in each) and a control group (15 participants). The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (Kessler et al., 2002) was used for data collection, serving as the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up measure. The intervention protocols included a 10-session, 90-minute weekly CBT program (Young et al., 2001) and an 8-session, 90-minute weekly EFT program (Greenberg, 2006), while the control group received no intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc tests with SPSS software.
Results: The findings indicated a significant difference between the experimental groups and the control group; both CBT and EFT significantly reduced psychological distress among the caregivers of cancer patients (p< 0.05). Furthermore, the results revealed that EFT was more effective than CBT in improving psychological distress in these caregivers (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, both cognitive-behavioral therapy and emotion-focused therapy can effectively reduce psychological distress among caregivers of cancer patients. These results can guide therapists in selecting appropriate therapeutic approaches for this population.
