Background: Conduct disorder symptoms are well-established risk factors for substance use during adolescence. However, More research has examined whether early substance use increases adolescents’ risk of developing conduct disorder symptoms. Therefore, in this study, using meta-analysis, we seek to determine the extent of the effect of addiction tendencies in adolescents with conduct disorder.
Aims: This study aimed to meta-analyze the studies of addiction tendencies in adolescents with conduct disorder.
Methods: The statistical population of this study was related to research on adolescent addiction and conduct disorder, and the other part was related to the relationship between addiction and conduct disorder from 2014 to 2024. Among 42 dissertations on addiction, conduct disorder, and addiction in adolescents, conduct disorder was identified as suitable for meta-analysis. To answer the meta-analysis questions, 9 articles were selected from a set of research conducted on the relationship between addiction tendency and adolescent conduct disorder in the country. The available and purposive sampling method is significant in the research related to the causes and factors affecting addiction in adolescents with conduct disorder and the treatment methods of addiction in adolescents with conduct disorder. Correlational research methods are significant for the causes and factors affecting conduct disorder addiction, and experimental and quasi-experimental methods in the field of conduct disorder addiction treatment methods.
Results: All studies were analyzed for the significance of the effect size. Statistical method: Correlation coefficient, multivariate regression, and multivariate analysis of variance in the causes and factors affecting addiction of adolescents with conduct disorder and treatment methods of conduct disorder and its causes and factors affecting it, and treatment methods of addiction in adolescents with conduct disorder were found to be statistically significant. The findings of the meta-analysis showed that the effect size of the tendency to addiction in adolescents with conduct disorder was 0.331 (P<0.001). Also, based on the findings, the effect sizes of the components of individual factors, family factors, psychological-personality factors, economic factors, social factors, and cultural factors were calculated, all of which were at medium to high levels. The results of the present study indicated that the effect size of the components of addiction tendency in adolescents with conduct disorder was large based on Cohen's interpretation criteria, and all components had a direct relationship with addiction tendency and conduct disorder in adolescents.
Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that research in the field of addiction in adolescents with conduct disorder needs to be reviewed and revised, and new research in these two areas seems necessary given the existing gaps.
