Background: Career path is a modern concept that has gained serious meaning and attention since the industrial revolution. Among the variables that can have a significant impact on it are career motivation and narrative identity.
Aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of career motivation and narrative identity on counseling students' career path choices.
Methods: The present research employed a descriptive-correlational method. The study population consisted of all 418 counseling students at Mohaghegh Ardabili University. In this research, a sample of 200 individuals was selected using simple random sampling based on Morgan’s table. The research instruments included the Job Motivation Questionnaire (Bakhshi et al., 2004), the Awareness of Narrative Identity Questionnaire (Halford & Millor, 2017), and the Career Path Management Questionnaire (Adekunle, 2011). The data collected from the present study were analyzed using SPSS-26 and SMART-PLS software.
Results: The results showed that considering the positiveness of the estimated path coefficient (β=0.770), it can be concluded that with increasing academic motivation scores, students' career path selection scores will increase. The results also showed that, according to what was brought, career motivation has a positive and direct relationship with career path selection. Also, considering the positiveness of the estimated path coefficient (β=0.625), it can be concluded that with increasing narrative identity scores, students' career path selection scores will increase.
Conclusion: Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that narrative identity has a positive and direct relationship with career path selection. The model’s validity is at an acceptable level, and the variables of job motivation and narrative identity are appropriate predictors for the students’ career path selection variable. Therefore, it is suggested that students share their career path plan with a career counselor. Furthermore, mass media, by utilizing influential features and possibilities on collective memory and narrative identity, can purposefully represent important concepts such as belief in ethics in life, prioritizing collective interests over individual ones, integration, creating unity, and career path selection, thereby providing a fertile ground for creating cultural and social contexts within a unified whole.
