Abstract:   (14 Views)
Background: Adoption-related research has focused more on its outcomes than on interpersonal processes, but recent trends in adoption studies are attempting to overcome this limitation. The comparison of the efficacy of positive parenting program training and parenting based on acceptance and commitment on the mother-child relationship has been studied in various studies, but there is a research gap regarding the comparison of the efficacy of these two types of parenting on the parent-child relationships of adoptive mothers.
Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of positive parenting and parenting based on acceptance and commitment on adoptive mothers' parent-child relationships.
Methods: The method of this study was a semi-experimental pretest-posttest design with two experimental groups and one control group. The statistical population of the study included all mothers of adoptive families who referred to counseling centers in Eslamshahr in 2022, using purposive sampling, 45 of them were selected and randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group (15 people in each group). The data collection tools in this study were the Parent-Child Relationship Scale (Pianta, 1994). For the first experimental group, the positive parenting program (Sanders et al., 2014) was implemented in 8 session, 90-minute, and for the second experimental group, the parenting based on acceptance and commitment (Coyne & Murrell, 2009) was implemented in 9 session, 90-minute. Also, data analysis of this study was performed using multivariate analysis of covariance and SPSS-24 software.
Results:The results of this study showed that both types of positive parenting programs and parenting based on acceptance and commitment were effective on parent-child relationships and its three components (P<0.01). The results also indicated that the efficacy of the positive parenting program was significantly higher than that of parenting based on acceptance and commitment (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Given the confirmation of the greater efficacy of the positive parenting program in this study, it is suggested that psychologists and counselors who work with adoptive parents consider this parenting program as an effective therapeutic program in their parenting education.
