Abstract:   (214 Views)
Background: Rumination, as a maladaptive cognitive process, plays a central role in the onset and maintenance of psychological pathologies; thus, identifying its predictors is of fundamental necessity. Meanwhile, executive functions, as the foundation of cognitive management, can effectively regulate and inhibit these repetitive thoughts through interaction with supportive constructs such as emotional intelligence and happiness.
Aims: The present study aimed to predict rumination based on executive functions, emotional intelligence, and happiness in married women.
Methods: The present study was descriptive-correlational in design. The statistical population consisted of married women in Tehran, from which a sample of 400 participants was selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire (Trapnell & Campbell, 1999), the Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (Holst & Thorell, 2014), the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (1997), and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (Argyle & Hills, 1989). Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation and simultaneous regression analysis via SPSS-22 software.
Results: The results indicated a significant negative relationship between rumination and the variables of executive functions, emotional intelligence, and happiness in married women (p<0.001). Specifically, improvements in executive functions, higher emotional intelligence, and enhanced happiness levels led to a decrease in rumination. Furthermore, regression analysis showed that rumination is significantly predictable through these variables. Based on the coefficient of determination (R2), the combination of executive functions, emotional intelligence, and happiness explained 29% of the total variance in rumination.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that deficits in executive functions and low levels of emotional intelligence and happiness provide a fertile ground for the occurrence of rumination in married women. Since these three variables significantly predict rumination, the results can be utilized by counselors and mental health professionals to design educational and therapeutic packages aimed at enhancing women’s psychological well-being and preventing the adverse effects of repetitive negative thinkin.
