Abstract: (17 Views)
Background: Given the increasing prevalence of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the associated challenges for both children and their parents, it is highly important to investigate factors that improve the psychological well-being of these children’s parents, as parents play a crucial role in the psychosocial and academic functioning of children and adolescents.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to compare marital intimacy and resilience in mothers of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and mothers of children with Specific Learning Disorder.
Methods: This research was applied in terms of its objective and cross-sectional-comparative in its data collection approach. The study population comprised 117 mothers of children diagnosed with Specific Learning Disorder (58 mothers) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (59 mothers) who had referred to rehabilitation centers and private clinics in Qazvin during the last quarter of the Persian year 1403. For sample size determination, simple random sampling was employed, and G*Power software (version 3.1.9.7) was used. Based on the test type, a large effect size (f = 0.40, following Cohen’s guidelines for F-tests), an alpha level of 0.05, and a statistical power of 0.80, a minimum sample size of 50 participants per group was calculated. Accordingly, 50 mothers from each group were selected based on the study’s inclusion and exclusion criteria. The instruments used in this research were the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (Connor & Davidson, 2003) and the Marital Intimacy Scale (Thompson & Walker, 1983). The collected data were analyzed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) via SPSS 24 statistical software.
Results: The results indicated a significant difference between the two groups of mothers (children with Specific Learning Disorder vs. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) in the linear combination of marital intimacy and resilience (p < 0.001). Follow-up univariate analyses also confirmed this significant difference for both variables individually, showing that mothers of children with SLD scored higher in both marital intimacy and resilience compared to mothers of children with ADHD (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Therefore, considering the influential role of parental relationships in the severity and reduction of symptoms in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Specific Learning Disorder, it is suggested that family psychological training workshops be implemented in special education schools and other psychological service centers and institutions related to children with these disorders
