Background: One of the factors affecting the retirement process is psychological well-being, the opposite of which is psychological ill-being . Ill-being  or psychological distress can disrupt the individual, family, and social functioning of the retiree. Despite numerous researches on promoting the psychological well-being of retired individuals, there is a research gap regarding the efficacy of educational packages based on local and cultural context in improving the psychological well-being of retired nurses.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of psychological well-being and ill-being training on the psychological well-being of retired nurses in Isfahan.
Methods: The method of this study was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population of the study included all retired male and female nurses from public or private hospitals in Isfahan in the spring of 2024, From among them, 30 people (20 women and 10 men) were selected using the convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to two experimental groups (15 people) and control groups (15 people). Research data was also collected using the scale of psychological well-being (Ryff, 1989), and for the experimental group, a researcher-made educational package program based on psychological well-being and ill-being education (Dorri et al., 2025), which was a 10-session program, was implemented. Also, to analyze the research data, the variance analysis with repeated measurements method was used using SPSS-23 software.
Results: The results showed that the psychological well-being and ill-being education package was effective in improving psychological well-being and all six of its components in retired nurses (P<0.001). The results of the study also indicated that the effect of the educational intervention used in the follow-up phase remained stable (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Given the confirmation of the efficacy of the psychological well-being and ill-being training package, it is recommended that ministry of health officials and career counselors use this training package for group sessions to increase psychological well-being and its components in nurses and other retired hospital employees.
