Background: Good news can induce significant psychological, emotional, and behavioral changes. Therefore, conducting studies to investigate the electrophysiological and personality-related correlates of such responses is essential. this good news, influenced by personal characteristics such as the behavioral activation system and the behavioral inhibition system, can produce different reactions, especially in the absolute power of alpha brain waves in the frontal lobe.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to compare the absolute power of frontal alpha brainwaves in response to good news among individuals with different behavioral activation and inhibition systems (BAS/BIS).
Methods: This study was a comparative research. The statistical population of the study includes all residents of Kermanshah city between the ages of 20 and 40 in the winter of 2024. based on the the G*Power software, two groups of 36 participants were identified as belonging to the extreme ends of the BAS and BIS dimensions were selected using the Questionnaire personality (Gray-Wilson, 1981). A video containing positive news was presented to the selected participants during the recording of their brain activity and Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) was employed to record brainwaves while participants were exposed to the positive news stimuli. The EEG recordings focused on the frontal regions to assess alpha wave activity. data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance through SPSS version 19.
Results: The results of MANOVA indicated significant differences between the two groups in the FP1 (P < 0.01), F7, F4, and F8 (P < 0.05), with higher alpha power observed in the BAS group and no significant differences were found between the groups at the F3 and FP2 sites (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, personality type appears to be a key factor in shaping electrophysiological responses such as frontal alpha brainwave activity in reaction to positive and pleasant news.
