Happiness is a general word that encompasses affective, emotional, social and cognitive elements and different factors play a role in its creation. The aim of the present research was to investigate the role of adaptive and non-adaptive problem solving styles in explaining students’ happiness. The method of this research was the correlation method. Statistical population consisted of all students of Guilan University in the 2011-2012 academic year, among which a sample of 187 students was selected by random cluster sampling method. To gather data, Problem-Solving Styles Scale (Cassidy & Long, 1996) and Oxford Happiness Scale (Argyle, 1989) were used. The results showed there is a significant positive correlation between the total happiness score and its subscales, and creativity, trust, attitude, and control problem-solving styles. Results of regression analysis revealed that helplessness style and trust style can explain 12 percent of the variance of students’ happiness. The results of independent -t test showed there is a significant difference between male and female students’ mean scores in the avoidance problem solving style. Also there is a significant difference between married and single students’ mean scores in the happiness variant and subscales of positive sensation, positive experience, and negative experience. Based on findings of the present study it can be concluded that using adaptive problem solving styles can lead to happiness.
