Background: Families with a military head are always exposed to psychological harm and a reduced quality of life due to the sensitivities, hardships, and specific dangers of a military person's job. Despite various studies on the effectiveness of positive psychology and compassion focused training on the psychological capital in different sample groups, there is a research gap in comparing the effectiveness of these two types of treatment on the psychological capital in spouses of Navy personnel.
Aims: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of positive psychology training and compassion focused training on the psychological capital of spouses of Navy personnel.
Methods: The method of this study was a quasi-experimental pre test-post test with a control group and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population of the study included all spouses of Navy personnel working at the Baqir al-Olum Naval Specialties Training Center branch in Nedaja/ Rasht in 2023. 54 people were selected from the statistical population using convenience sampling method. Then, 54 people were randomly assigned to two groups, positive psychology training (first experimental group) and compassion focused training (second experimental group), and a control group (17 people in each group). The instrument used in this study was the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (Luthans et al., 2007). Also, analysis of variance with repeated measurements and SPSS-26 software were used to analyze the data.
Results: The results of this study showed that both positive psychology training and compassion focused training were effective in improving psychological capital and its components (P<0.001). However, the effect of the positive psychology intervention was greater than that of the compassion focused training (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Considering the findings of this study regarding the greater effectiveness of positive psychology training on the psychological capital of women with military spouses, This educational method can be used as a clinical intervention by specialists, especially family counselors and couple therapists, to enhance the psychological capital of this group of women.
