Abstract:   (289 Views)
Background: Childhood traumatic events are a major public health concern and, as evidenced by research findings, are the root cause of many psychological problems, such as depression and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). A review of the existing literature indicates that various treatments have been examined for individuals with childhood trauma experiences. However, no study has yet compared the effectiveness of Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).
Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Internal Family Systems Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy on symptoms of depression and body dysmorphic disorder in women with childhood trauma experiences.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, a control group, and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population included all women with childhood trauma experiences who referred to counseling centers in Lahijan city in 2023. Using convenience sampling, 60 individuals were selected and assigned to two experimental groups and one control group (20 participants in each group). The research instruments included the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1996), the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire (Phillips et al., 1997), and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (Bernstein et al., 2003). Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 25) and repeated-measures analysis of variance.
Results: The findings revealed that both interventions were effective in reducing symptoms of depression and body dysmorphic disorder, with the therapeutic effects remaining stable during the follow-up phase (P< 0.001). Additionally, the results indicated that Internal Family Systems Therapy was more effective in alleviating symptoms of depression (P< 0.001). However, no significant difference was observed between Internal Family Systems Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in their effectiveness on symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (P< 0.001).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, Internal Family Systems Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy can be considered effective treatments for improving symptoms of depression and body dysmorphic disorder in individuals with childhood trauma experiences.
