Background: Death anxiety, as an existential crisis, affects people's quality of life. On the other hand, self-compassion has been shown to be a protective factor against various anxiety states, including death anxiety. Despite numerous studies on the relationships between the aforementioned variables, There is a research gap regarding the development of a structural model to explain death anxiety based on quality of life with the mediating role of self-compassion.
Aims: The purpose of this study was to develop a structural model to explain death anxiety based on quality of life with the medi mediating ation role of self-compassion.
Methods: The method of this research, correlation was a structural equation modeling type. The statistical population of the study included all employees and retirees aged 50 to 65 who visited health centers located in the east of Tehran in 2023. The statistical sample size was 354 people, who were selected using convenience Sampling. The data collection tools in this research included Death Anxiety Scale (Templer, 1970), WHOQOL: Measuring Quality of Life (World Health Organization, 1996) and Self-Compassion Scale (Neff, 2003). To analyze the data of this study, structural equation modeling method and SPSS26 and AMOS23 software were used.
Results: Based on the results of the fit indices, the structural model of this study had a good fit. The results of the research data analysis showed that quality of life and self-compassion negatively and significantly predict death anxiety (P<0.01). The results also showed that quality of life, mediated by self-compassion, predicts death anxiety (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Considering the findings of this study that quality of life, mediated by self-compassion, predicts death anxiety in individuals, Psychologists can reduce death anxiety in clients by helping them improve their quality of life and self-compassion.
