Background: Patients undergoing dialysis face numerous physical and psychological challenges that can affect their life expectancy. Among these, psychotherapeutic interventions such as cognitive-behavioral group therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy have been recognized as effective methods for improving mental health. However, the comparison of the effectiveness of these two methods in increasing life expectancy in dialysis patients has been less explored.
Aims: The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral group therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on the life expectancy of dialysis patients.
Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental, of the pre-test-post-test type with a control group and a three-month follow-up. The statistical population of this study included all dialysis patients referred to the dialysis center of Khatam Al-Anbia Hospital in Shahrud city in the year 1402 (2023), totaling 211 individuals. From the statistical population, 45 individuals were selected through purposive sampling. The research tool included the Life Expectancy Questionnaire (Snyder, 1991). The cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol (Valsaraj et al., 2021) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (Segal et al., 2023) were implemented for the experimental groups. Data were analyzed using mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) in SPSS version 25.
Results: The findings showed that both cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy had a significant effect on the life expectancy of dialysis patients in the post-test (P< 0.001). There were differences in life expectancy scores across the three stages of pre-test, post-test, and follow-up, regardless of the type of intervention. Among the two intervention methods, cognitive-behavioral therapy was more effective in increasing the life expectancy of dialysis patients (P< 0.001).
Conclusion: The results indicate that the use of psychotherapeutic interventions, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy, can be considered as a practical strategy for improving life expectancy and enhancing the mental health of dialysis patients
