Background: Interpersonal emotion regulation is a component that has recently gained considerable attention and plays an important role in couple relationships. However, there is no research specifically examining interpersonal emotion regulation strategies in couples, and there is limited knowledge in this area
Aims: The present study aimed to investigate interpersonal emotion regulation strategies among married couples of Tehran.
Methods: This study was a qualitative, phenomenological research. The participants comprised 15 married individuals from Tehran, selected through convenience sampling during 2022 to 2024. Sampling continued until data saturation was achieved. Semi-structured interviews were used, with open-ended questions tailored to the research objectives, followed by probing questions to explore interpersonal emotion regulation strategies. Data was analyzed using the Colaizzi method and MAXQDA software version 2020.
Results: After analyzing the data, two main themes emerged: supportive behaviors and avoidant behaviors, with six sub-themes: verbal support, activity-based support, non-verbal support, problem-solving support, constructing distancing, and avoidance of perceived emotional experiences.
Conclusion: Our findings helped to understand interpersonal emotion regulation strategies among Iranian couples and could be utilized in training programs for addressing interpersonal issues and enhancing the quality of marital relationships in Iran.
