Background: Social self-efficacy literature exhibits significant diversity, both in terms of their level of analysis, their antecedents, components, and consequences, and their focal point. This diversity underscores the necessity for a bibliometric study and content analysis to provide a comprehensive and clear picture of the research conducted in this domain.
Aims: The present paper develops a knowledge map and a conceptual framework of the studies in the field of social self-efficacy.
Methods: This research employs a mixed-method approach. First, a co-occurrence analysis is performed on documents from the Web of Science database. Then, through qualitative content analysis of the documents, followed by coding (thematic analysis method), a conceptual framework is developed. For the quantitative component, a complete enumeration of studies is used, with 497 studies undergoing co-occurrence analysis. The qualitative component involves a purposive selection of relevant international studies, including but not limited to the Web of Science database, until theoretical saturation is achieved.
Results: The results show that among all the keywords, the terms "social self-efficacy," "adolescence", "depression", "esteem", "validation", and "support" are the most frequently used and of high importance, with occurrence counts of 33, 13, 12, 12, 12, and 9, and total link strengths of 180, 84, 85, 79, 80, and 63, respectively. The content analysis reveals that the studies in this field can be classified into six main categories: Positive determinants of social self-efficacy, Barriers to social self-efficacy, Components of social self-efficacy, Psychological consequences of social self-efficacy, Social consequences of social self-efficacy, and Moderating factors between social self-efficacy and its antecedents/consequences.
Conclusion: The results clarify the role of social self-efficacy in reducing depression and increasing esteem, as well as the role of beliefs in enhancing social self-efficacy. Furthermore, the majority of the literature has focused on the antecedents of social self-efficacy and its psychological consequences.
