Abstract:   (198 Views)
Background: Children of divorce, within the family institution—the most important cultural and social structure—often exhibit serious psychological symptoms following parental separation. Previous research indicates that child-centered, integrative transdiagnostic therapy improves their mental health; however, its effects on social competence components and emotional regulation difficulties in emotionally dysregulated children of divorce have not been systematically examined.
Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of transdiagnostic therapy on social competence and difficulty in emotional regulation in divorced children with emotional dysfunction.
Methods: The present study was an applied, quasi-experimental study using a pre-test–post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population included divorced female children with emotional dysfunction (9–12 years old) enrolled in elementary schools in Tehran during the 1402–1403 academic year. A total of 28 participants were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (14 in each group).Children in the experimental group received integrative transdiagnostic therapy (Ehrenreich-May et al., 2018) for ten weeks in ten 75-minute sessions. In this study, the Emotional Dysfunction Questionnaire (AQ), Riff et al (2005). the Social Competence Scale (SCS), Moraj (1975), and the Children's Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) by Garnevsky et al. (2007) were used. Data were analyzed by mixed analysis of variance SPSS23 statistical software.
Results: The results showed that integrative transdiagnostic therapy had a significant effect on social competence (P<0.001; Eta=0.58; F=40.36), positive emotional regulation (P<0.001; Eta=0.54; F=15.30), and negative emotional regulation (P<0.001; Eta=0.54; F=11.30) of children of divorce with emotional dysfunction.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, integrative transdiagnostic therapy with identification of emotions, training in emotional awareness and knowledge, cognitive and emotional reappraisal, identification of emotion avoidance patterns, and examination of emotion-induced behaviors can be used as an effective treatment to improve social competence and reduce difficulty in emotional regulation in divorced children with emotional dysfunction. Background: Children of divorce, within the family institution—the most important cultural and social structure—often exhibit serious psychological symptoms following parental separation.
