Background: Domestic violence has profound psychological effects on women, leading to decreased self-efficacy and reinforced maladaptive schemas. Although mindfulness is recognized as an effective intervention for improving mental health, limited research has examined its impact on self-efficacy and maladaptive schemas in women affected by domestic violence. This study aims to fill this research gap by exploring the relationship between mindfulness, self-efficacy, and maladaptive schemas in this specific group.
Aims:The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness on self-efficacy and maladaptive schemas in women with a history of domestic violence in Kerman.
Methods:This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of 71 women with a history of domestic violence who visited 35 counseling centers in Kerman in 2024. Using convenience sampling, 30 participants were selected and assigned to experimental and control groups. Data were collected using the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ, 1999) and the Self-Efficacy Scale (Sherer & Maddux, 1982) and analyzed in SPSS-25 using multivariate analysis of variance (MANCOVA).
Results: The results indicated that mindfulness intervention significantly increased self-efficacy and reduced maladaptive schemas in women with a history of domestic violence (P < 0.05). Improved self-efficacy was associated with enhanced feelings of control and personal empowerment, while the reduction in maladaptive schemas (e.g., emotional deprivation, abandonment, and mistrust) reflected the positive impact of mindfulness on cognitive restructuring and emotional regulation.
Conclusion: Given the effectiveness of mindfulness in enhancing self-efficacy and mitigating maladaptive schemas, it is recommended that this intervention be incorporated into support and treatment programs for domestic violence survivors in counseling centers, shelters, and related organizations. Mindfulness training can help these women strengthen their psychological resilience and take effective steps toward mental health recovery and rebuilding their lives.
