Background: Aging is a challenging period during which a decline in individual capabilities may lead to cognitive dysfunction and impairment. These issues are directly influenced by emotional factors such as positive affectivity and indirectly through lifestyle factors. The lack of similar studies within the country has provided the basis for conducting the present research.
Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of lifestyle in the relationship between positive emotional reactivity and cognitive functioning in the elderly.
Methods: This research was descriptive-correlational using structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the research included all elderly people in the elderly centers of Urmia city in 1402, of which 220 were selected as the research sample using the available sampling method and responded to the lifestyle questionnaire (Elehrabi and Sohrabi, 2016), the Panas Positive and Negative Affect Scale (Watson et al., 1988), and cognitive function (Floustin et al., 1975). After completing and collecting the questionnaires, the collected data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient, structural equations, and path analysis using SPSS22 and AMOS22 software.
Results: The results showed that there is a positive and direct effect between positive emotionality and cognitive function (p < 0.001) and lifestyle and cognitive function in the elderly (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the mediating role of lifestyle in the relationship between positive emotional reactivity and cognitive functioning was confirmed.
Conclusion: According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that positive emotionality and lifestyle are important variables that can directly and indirectly lead to improved cognitive functions in the elderly.
