Abstract:   (74 Views)
Background: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological disorder that disrupts social interactions and child behavior and places great psychological pressure on parents, especially mothers. Despite the role of positive parenting in improving parent-child interactions and parental self-efficacy, few studies have examined its effectiveness among children with autism spectrum disorder.
Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of positive parenting training on parent-child conflicts and parental self-efficacy in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder.
Method: This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental method, with experimental and control groups, with a two-month follow-up. The statistical population included all mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder referred to the centers for organizing, treating, and rehabilitating autistic disorders in Kermanshah in 2014. 30 mothers were selected using a convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (15 mothers in the experimental group and 15 mothers in the control group). Mothers in the experimental group received positive parenting training once a week for 8 90-minute sessions. The Parent-Child Conflict Questionnaire (Strauss, 1990) and Parenting Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (Domka et al., 1996) were used. The data were analyzed by mixed variance analysis using SPSS23 statistical software.
Results: The results showed that positive parenting training had a significant effect on reducing parent-child conflicts (F=28.42, η²=0.54, P<0.001) and increasing parental self-efficacy (F=37.13, η²=0.60, P<0.001) in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (P<0.001). These changes were maintained at the 2-month follow-up stage and no difference was observed between post-test and follow-up (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Positive parenting training, by reducing parent-child conflicts and increasing parental self-efficacy, can be an effective approach to improving family interactions in mothers of children with autism. This intervention, by teaching communication skills and mood management, has the potential for widespread use in clinics, counseling centers, and family-centered mental health programs.
