Background: Marital conflict as a tension between life partners may stem from factors unique to the family of origin and lead to a decrease in emotional exchanges between couples, and if no solution is found, it will pave the way for more serious problems to arise.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of an integrated couples therapy package centered on the influential indicators of the family of origin in marital conflicts and emotional support of conflicting women and men referring to counseling centers.
Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a two-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population of the study included all women and men with marital conflicts referring to counseling centers in Marand city (Hamraz, Sedaghat, and Pooya Mehr). The sample size consisted of 60 people (30 in the experimental group (15 women and 15 men) and 30 in the control group (15 women and 15 men) who were selected using convenience sampling, and randomly assigned to the groups. Training was separately provided for women and men in the experimental group, and they received ten sessions (90 minutes) and one session of integrated couple therapy intervention per week (Rezaei Sharif et al., 2025). However, But the control group did not receive training. The data collection tools were the Marital Conflict Questionnaire (Sanaei, 1990) and the Emotional Empathy Questionnaire (Mehrabian and Epstein, 1972). The obtained data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance using SPSS version 26 software.
Results: The results showed that integrated couple therapy training (comprising Bowen's emotional system, cognitive-behavioral, imagotherapy, and contextual approaches) led to a reduction in marital conflict and improved emotional empathy among conflicting women and men in the experimental group (P≤0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, integrative couple therapy training (comprising Bowen's family systems theory, cognitive-behavioral therapy, Imago therapy, and contextual therapy) can be used to reduce marital conflict and increase emotional empathy in conflicted men and women..
