Abstract:   (5 Views)
Background: The relationship between the human being and God in the Masnavi is grounded in three mystical concepts: the unity of being, the unity of vision, and love and annihation of the self. Each of these concepts contributes to positive psychological outcomes, including the reduction of existential anxiety, the enhancement of awareness, and liberation from material attachments, ultimately leading to psychological peace and tranquility. Despite the significance of this relationship, previous studies have focused primarily on the philosophical and literary dimensions of these concepts. Consequently, a clear gap remains in the systematic investigation of the psychological consequences of the human–God relationship, particularly as represented in the Masnavi.
Purpose: The present study aimed to conduct a psychological examination of the relationship between the human being and God in the Masnavi.
Method: This study employed a descriptive–analytical design based on qualitative content analysis. The data were collected through library research and direct examination of the six books of the Masnavi. From approximately 25,000 couplets, 35 couplets related to the human–God relationship were purposively selected. The selection was based on thematic keywords, explicit or implicit references to the psychological consequences of this relationship, and the recurrence of relevant themes across different books. The selected couplets were coded and categorized through qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. Mystical themes—including unity, spiritual vision, love, and annihilation of the self—as well as their psychological consequences, such as peace, tranquility, and reduced anxiety, were subsequently analyzed and interpreted.
Findings: The findings indicate that, in the Masnavi, Rumi portrays the relationship between the human being and God through three mystical components: the unity of being, the unity of vision, and self-annihilating love. Each of these components provides a foundation for attaining psychological peace and tranquility. The findings further demonstrate that belief in the meaningfulness and purposefulness of existence, present-moment awareness, and freedom from material attachments constitute the principal psychological mechanisms through which the Masnavi addresses existential anxiety and facilitates believers’ spiritual well-being.
Conclusion: The results show that, by conceptualizing the human–God relationship in terms of the unity of being, the unity of vision, and mystical love, the Masnavi offers a practical and applicable model for achieving psychological peace and tranquility. This model may be employed in spiritual counseling, religiously oriented psychotherapy, and mental health promotion programs in Islamic communities. It may also provide an innovative framework for addressing the existential anxieties of the modern era.
